All prices on our site exclude sales tax, unless otherwise indicated. Any applicable New Zealand GST charges for customers in New Zealand or VAT for customers in Europe will be shown on the order confirmation page. Sales tax is NOT applied by Wētā Workshop to orders originating outside your customs area, but these charges are instead levied by the customs in your country along with any further taxes and import duties.

New rules for the UK from 1 Jan 2021.

As the United Kingdom has formally left the European Union, all orders with a product value not exceeding GBP135.00 are subject to UK VAT at a rate of 20%. Wētā Workshop collects this VAT during checkout and reports it to the UK authorities. The VAT is collected regardless of which Wētā Workshop warehouse the order is shipped from.

On orders over GBP135 any taxes and duties are collected at the UK border and on-charged to the customer by HM Excise and Customs. In addition, an Import Duty is charged on collectibles - currently 6%.

The importation formalities are done on the customer's behalf by the parcel carrier (UPS) and a brokerage fee is therefore also usually payable.

VAT

(Value Added Tax) is payable on all items shipped from our NL warehouse to addresses within the European Union. As of 1 July 2021 we are legally obliged to charge the VAT rate of the destination country for such orders, INCLUDING orders sent from overseas destination if the value of the order + shipping is EUR150 or less. For orders of EUR150 or more, import taxes are payable directly to customs and Weta Workshop will not be charging you these.

What is a Sales Tax?

Most countries and many states and regions impose a sales tax on goods and services housed within that country, even on orders from abroad. In some countries, it’s called VAT (Value Added Tax). In others, it’s GST (Goods & Services Tax). In the US, it’s known as Sales Tax or Use Tax.

Sales tax is applied as a percentage and is collected by the tax authorities of that country, state, or region.

Why am I being charged a Sales Tax?

Usually, when you purchase something in a shop on the high street, sales tax is included on the price tag. Everybody pays the same tax for that item. You can usually find it listed on your receipt.

Because our online shop is global, we can’t simply display the tax-inclusive price – because it doesn’t apply to everybody, everywhere. For example, items shipped to New Zealand attract a sales tax charge of 15%. Customers in California pay 7.25%.

The tax for your region is added before checkout if we are required to charge tax on behalf of your government.

When will I be charged sales tax?

When you order from us, the correct regional sales tax will be added at checkout, after you have filled out your shipping address.

Does Wētā Workshop profit from Sales Tax?

No. WētāWorkshop does not profit in any way from these taxes. We provide the same base cost to all our customers, regardless of where they live in the world.

Will I pay a different tax amount if my item ships from a different warehouse?

No. Sales tax applies regardless of where the shipment originates. Your shipping address is what determines the tax.
